Documenta was founded to encourage the process of dealing with the past and establishing factual truth about the war and to contribute to shifting the discussion from the level of a dispute over facts towards a dialogue on interpretations.
It contributes to developing the individual and social process of dealing with the past to build sustainable peace in Croatia and the region.
How can it help you
If you have information about the victims of the war in Croatia (dead, killed, missing, tortured, imprisoned), perpetrators, witnesses, and/or written, photo, or video documentation of war crimes committed, you are invited to contact Documenta or fill out the victim form to help create an accurate and fact-based review of war events from 1991-1995.
Documenting war crimes and enhancing judicial processes
Documenta is a central organization for collecting data and publishing research about wartime events, war crimes and human rights violations. Likewise, Documenta monitors court processes both locally and regionally in order to contribute to the improvement of judicial standards and practices in trails of war crimes.
Culture of memorialization
Documenta encourages public dialogue regarding the culture of memorialization by systematically familiarizing the public with the politics of memory, e.g. by organizing educational study trips to places marked by traumatic events in the period between 1941-1999, by shooting short documentaries on these topics and by mapping places of memory and suffering.
